Kenyan runner, Rodgers Rop has been a faithfull pacesetter for Haile Gebrselassie. At 2007 Berlin Marathon, he began under strict instructions. He was to run the first 30K in precisely 1 hour 29 minutes and then drop out. His job was to set pace for Haile Gebrselassie to break the marathon record.

“I ran the first 30K in 1:28:56, and when I dropped out, I saw he was still feeling O.K.,” said Rop of Kenya. “I knew that he was going to make it.”

Rop was right.

Haile Gebrselassie astonished us all when he went on to break the marathon world record in a time of 2 hours 4 minutes 6 seconds, securing a mark he had coveted since he was a teenager in Ethiopia. That record brought the total records by Haile Gebrselassie to 23.

It seems Haile Gebrsellasie was satisfied with the work done by Rodgers Rop that he has once again hired services of Rodgers Rop to try and break the world record at 2008 Dubai Marathon.

One Kenyan runner who wont be hired is Elijah Mbogo, the pacesetter who defied team orders to win 2007 Singapore marathon.

Rop is an accomplished long distance runner. In 2002 he won both the Boston marathon and the New York Marathon. His personal best is 2:07:32 set at hamburg Marathon in 2007.

The 31 year old Rop, like many other kenyan runner works as a police officer during the off season.

He has a son who unsurprisingly is named “Boston”
