welcome to today highlights in sporting history. This was the day in 1903 “The Great Train Robbery”, the 1st Western film, released and in 1982 Michael Jackson released “Thriller” which holds the record of highest number of copies sold, over 50million

In 1653, An athlete from Croydon is reported to have run 20 miles from St Albans to London in less than 90 minutes

In 1891 James Naismith creates the game of basketball. He was a Physical education teacher at YMCA international training school when  Naismith was asked to make a game that would not take up much room, was not too rough, and at the same time, could be played indoors. As they say, the rest is history.

1929 Game of BINGO invented by Edwin S Lowe. He is credited with the invention but the truth is, he hired a Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, to help him increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had invented 6,000 different bingo cards. [It is said that Leffler then went insane.] Moral of the story, too much work can kill.

In 1973, The man labeled the Australian shark, Jack Nicklaus becomes 1st golfer to earn $2 million in a year


 

In1988, NBC bids record $401 million to capture rights to 1992 Barcelona Olympics. NBC has paid US$3.5 billions for rights to Next years beijing games. 

In1996, He has never won a major but Colin Montgomerie of Scotland wins Million Dollar Challenge, the richest first prize in golf – $1 million

In1997, Golden State Warrior guard Latrell Sprewell goes nuts, attacks his coach P J Carlesimo. According to the story When he was criticised by the coach, Sprewell responded that he was not in the mood for criticism and told the coach to keep his distance. When Carlesimo approached, Sprewell threatened to kill him and dragged him to the ground by his throat, choking him for 10-15 seconds before his teammates pulled Sprewell off his coach. Sprewell returned about 20 minutes later and landed a glancing blow at Carlesimo. Bad boy Mike Tyson would have been proud!
