Today men and women are given equal opportunities in athletics more than any other sport. It wasnt always like this, Greta Waitz was among the firts femal athlete who showed the world women are a force to reckon with and deserve equal treament. Go girls.

In 1871, 1st US amateur outdoor athletic games were held in New York.

In 1918, Margaret Owen sets world typing speed record of 170 wpm for 1 min. Its not a sport but it has all aspect of sports, speed, endurance and being the best.

In 1979, Greta Waitz wins New York City  marathon (02:27:33) A first of her 4 wins in New York.

In 1984, Steve Jones runs Chicago Marathon in world record 2:08:05

In 1989, 1st black owners, Betram Lee and Peter Bynoe,  to own a major sports team, purchasing Denver Nuggets for $65m
